The Grief We Don't Talk About: Mourning What You Never Had

grief

Beautiful soul,

In over twenty years as a professional medium, I have sat with more grief than I could ever count. And I've learned that grief doesn't always look the way we expect it to.

We know the grief of losing someone we adored. "My mom was my best friend, and I don't know how I'm going to go on without her." That grief is enormous, and it deserves every bit of the space we give it.

But there's another kind of grief I witness just as often, and it rarely gets named. It's the grief of losing someone you loved deeply... while also grieving the relationship you never got to have with them.

I think of the woman who sat across from me and told me she devoted thirty-five years of her life to a man. Thirty-five years. And when I connected with him in spirit, he wasn't talking about all of the precious memories. He was apologizing. For not being the partner, he should have been. For not putting in the effort. For not making his family the priority they deserved to be.

I think of the parent who realizes, only after they have passed, just how much their words and actions shaped that child's pain. Who understands now, in a way they couldn't while they were living, that they were never taught unconditional love themselves... and so they didn't know how to give it. Not because they didn't love their child. Because they didn't have it to give.

That is its own kind of heartbreak. You lose someone you loved, and in the same breath, you lose the last chance to heal what was never quite right between you. The conversation you always thought you'd have someday. The apology you hoped might come. The version of the relationship you kept waiting for, that never got to arrive while they were here.

If this is your grief, I want you to hear me say clearly... it is real. It doesn't make you ungrateful, or unloving, or disloyal to grieve someone AND grieve what you never had with them. Both can live in the same heart at the same time. Grief has never been simple.

And here is something I've come to know from this work, that I hope brings you a little peace. What doesn't get healed here doesn't stay unfinished forever. I have watched so many souls come through with exactly the accountability, the ownership, and the tenderness their loved ones on this side needed to hear. Sometimes the healing just happens on a different timeline than we would have chosen.

If you're moving through this kind of grief right now, I gently invite you to call on Archangel Azrael. Archangel Azrael is known as the angel of transition, who walks with souls as they cross over, and who also walks with those of us left here grieving them. Ask Azrael to help you exchange the parts of this that are so painful for a little more peace, in whatever way you're able to receive it today. Healing doesn't have to happen all at once. It just has to keep moving.

Surrounding you in so much love,
Heather
